The Shitalakhya is a distributary river of the Brahmaputra which has changed its course at least twice in the Bangladesh region in the near past, indircetly affecting the flow of water in the Shitlakhya. The length of this river is about 73km,the width is 73m and the depth is 14m.At first stage,it flows  southwest direction and then east of the city of Narayanganj  in the central Bangladesh until it merges with the Dhaleswari near kalagachhiya. The Shitlakya runs almost parallel to the Brahmaputra and after passing by Narayanganj,it joins Dhaleswari. The course of the Brahmaputra through Dhaka district was deserted by the 18th century when it flowed further east and joined the Meghna river near Bhairab.A former capital region "Sonapur" which is  stood on the bank of the Shitlakya river.A fort  which was built by Isa Khan (a former ruler of the area) ,stands on this bank. The river was connected with "Lalbagh Fort "in Dhaka through an underground tunnel."Sonakanda Fort" also stands on the bank of this river. The historical mosque "Bandarshahi Mosque"(built in 1481 by Baba Saleh),"Kadam Rasul Mosque" (containing the footprints of Hazrat Mohammad Sallallahu Aliehis wasallam) stands on the bank of this river. The famous Adamjee Jute Mills are stood on the bank of this river.
